How to: Eat Three Meals in the East Village for $7

fleish:

Breakfast

NATHAN’S, the hot dog place on 2nd and 14th, now offers breakfast. This means two real eggs with American cheese on a real English muffin — for $0.99. For another 50 cents, you can get bacon or sausage. Coffee is a bit more. This is the best deal I’ve ever seen for my favorite mini sandwich — it even beats corner delis and Grey’s Papaya, where you get Egg Beaters on a hamburger bun for $2.25. The sausage is tasty, though, and you get free weak coffee.

Lunch

An easy one. Two slices of 2 BROS. PIZZA (St. Marks and 2nd) for $2.00, or one falafel from Mamoun’s (St. Marks and 3rd) for $2.50. Mamoun’s is way more delicious, but you can find a cheaper falafel here. The other $.99 pizza contender is Mamani (8th and A) but it does not compare.

Dinner

Is it Tuesday? Go to the Hop Devil Grill on 7th St. and Ave. A for $.99 tacos. They come in beef, chicken, or veggie, and are made with actual tortilla, real lettuce, and come with salsa. Amazing deal, and much tastier than Taco Bell — although the $3.50 Crunchwrap Supreme is nothing to sneeze at.

Right by my apartment is a corner deli (12th and C) where you can get a burger, cooked like a panini, for $2.50 — and it’s quite tasty. Another $1.50 gets you onion rings.

Grey’s Papaya is a given. Two delicious hot dogs with sauerkraut and onions for $3 is an awesome deal.

Vanessa’s Dumplings (14th and 2nd) has a recession special that’ll get you 12 dumplings for about $3.50. But for even cheaper, you can go to Trader Joe’s right next door, wait in line for an hour, buy an enormous package of frozen pork dumplings ($3.00) and be set for the next three dinners.

Drinks

Kenka (St. Marks and 3rd) is that basement-level Japanese place with the sign you can’t read. They also have $1.50 Sapporo — but an $8 minimum. You can order bull penis.

Teneleven, on C between 10th and 11th, has a never-ending fridge of $2 PBR, and there’s always a place to sit. Blue and Gold (7th and 2nd) has $3 well drinks all night. And there’s plenty of specials. Is it your birthday? Free drinks, all night, at Cheap Shots (140 1st Ave.). Or just go back to Trader Joe’s and buy a bottle of Charles Shaw for $3.
